Ananya Panday made her Bollywood debut in Student of The Year 2 (2019) and the film continues to hold a special place in her heart—especially when it comes to her character’s look and style. In her recent podcast appearance with NIF Global (New York Institute of Fashion), the actress candidly reflected on her debut role as Shreya Randhawa and revealed how fashion played a pivotal role in shaping her screen presence.

I was very young when I started. And I was just so honored that Manish Malhotra was going to be a part of my first film because he’s actually been a part of a lot of actresses’ first films. He’s seen so many of the most iconic actresses’ first shots ever. He’s been present over there, which in itself is only such a big deal for an actor,” Ananya shared.

The actress praised Manish Malhotra not just as a designer, but also as a mentor who guided her through her early days on set. “And Manish, of course, he’s a designer, but he’s so much more than that. He’s a guide. He gives you so much advice. He’s had so much experience being on film sets. So he’s actually there for all of it. He’ll kind of tell you how to stand, how to carry yourself, which was very helpful for me at that time because I literally didn’t know anything,” Panday added.

Opening up about Shreya’s style, Ananya Panday revealed how her look was designed to contrast with Tara Sutaria’s character. “When it came to my character Shreya, if you guys have seen the film, she was kind of like the spunkier one. She was a black sheep in her family. And we wanted to go slightly edgier with her style because with Tara’s character, we wanted to have a juxtaposition,” she shared.

“We did a lot of mixing of prints, as I remember. We did a lot of racer prints at that time, ripped jeans, funky backpacks, a lot of sweaters that were distressed. Yeah, we just wanted her to kind of look like she doesn’t fit into this world because that’s the character. And also, we had a school uniform, we had a blazer. So her blazer was kind of different. She kind of had pins on it that was different from what the other students had”, she recalled about her athletic character who inspired to be a dancer in the film.

With Manish Malhotra’s signature touch and Ananya’s youthful energy, Shreya Randhawa became one of the most stylish on-screen debut looks in recent Bollywood memory.
