Honda offers sneak peek into first electric motorcycle

Japanese automaker Honda released a video offering a sneak peek into its first-ever electric motorcycle on Tuesday, September 2. It is likely to unveil the vehicle or share further details on September 16. 

The company had teased the soon-to-launch motorcycle in July this year, exciting bikers worldwide. Its two-wheeler electric vehicles (EVs) were so far restricted to scooters.  

“Building on my 20 years of experience with Honda ICE FUN models, we have applied the know-how accumulated over the years to the EV motorcycle,” Masatsugu Tanaka, Project Lead for Honda’s EV FUN Concept.   

In the video, Tanaka can be seen testing the vehicle near Honda’s research and development facility in Offenbach, Germany. The company said it has done extensive testing in Europe, its target market, to evaluate riding performance, charging, and daily usability. 

Honda had earlier proclaimed EVs as “the most effective solution” in the motorcycle and automobile categories. In May 2024, it committed to investing 10 trillion yen ($65 billion) through fiscal 2031 to deliver EV models around the world, including the US and China.

It said at the time that battery EVs and fuel cell EVs will make up 40% of Honda Motor Co.’s global auto sales by 2030, with global production capacity for more than 2 million EVs.

In India, Honda made a rather late entry in the two-wheeler EV segment. Although EV scooters have become a common sight on Indian roads for a few years now, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI), the automaker’s Indian subsidiary, ventured into electric scooters in India only last year.
