The Koyambedu police arrested a panchayat president on charges of stealing a gold chain from a co-passenger while travelling in a bus.

Sources in the police said Varaslakshmi, 50, a resident of Nerkundram, was recently on a bus to attend a wedding reception in Kancheepuram, and after the function, she returned home to find that her four-sovereign gold chain was missing. She then lodged a complaint with the Koyambedu police.

After their investigation, the police found that the woman seated beside Varalakshmi in the bus had allegedly stolen the chain. The police traced the suspect, who was identified as Bharathi, 56, a DMK functionary and president of Naryampattu panchayat in Tirupattur district.

The police apprehended Bharathi, and further investigation is under way.
