Abishek Porel, the Bengal and Delhi Capitals cricketer, has been arrested in a sexual assault case. He was taken into custody by the Hooghly police, and charged with rape, sexual assault and criminal intimidation.
Porel, who has played 32 first class and 35 IPL games, has been accused by a medical student of exploiting her sexually on the false promise of marriage. The case pertains to a complaint in June by the alleged victim.
After his arrest on Monday night, Porel was produced before a court on Tuesday (August 11) and remanded to a three-day police custody. Hooghly (Rural) SP Kunwar Bhushan Singh did not immediately respond to calls and messages from this website.
The police action followed after the Calcutta High Court, on July 20, ordered his arrest. They also seized his mobile phone to prevent circulation of photographs of the complainant. Porel is understood to have been booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) section and Information Technology Act.
The incident came to light after the medical student lodged a complaint on June 23 at the Mogra Police Station stating that the two had been in a relationship for three years and Porel had reneged on his promise to marry her.
The woman later approached the High Court which ordered the arrest of the cricketer.
