The city is set to come alive with stripes, roars, and rhythms as preparations for the iconic Pulikkali (tiger dance) hit fever pitch ahead of Onam. On Tuesday, Mayor M.K. Varghese raised the ceremonial flag at Naduvilal, formally marking the countdown to this year’s celebrations.

This year, nine Pulikkali troupes will prowl through the city streets on September 8, thrilling spectators. Among those taking part are teams from the Viyyur Yuvajana Sangham, Ayyanthol Desam, Seetharam Mill Desam, Kuttankulangara, Chakkamukku, Shankarankulangara, Naikkanal, Paturaikkal, and Veliyannur.

Months of behind-the-scenes preparations are reaching their final stages. Troupes have already booked their tiger dancers and drummers well in advance, with artists perfecting elaborate body paintings and vibrant static displays to outshine rivals. Massive flex boards featuring roaring tigers and bold slogans have been installed across the city and neighbourhoods, drumming up excitement and drawing crowds.

The Thrissur Corporation has announced attractive prizes: ₹62,500 for the best troupe, ₹50,000 for second place, and ₹43,750 for third, along with trophies. For the first time, a special award for the best tiger body art will be given, setting the stage for even fiercer competition. Each participating troupe will also receive ₹3,12,500 as assistance.

Tradition blends with innovation in this rustic art form, while pot-bellied tigers remain in high demand. Some teams are experimenting with social media campaigns and online promotions to showcase their creativity and mobilise local pride. Not to be left behind, Kummatti dancers have also stepped up their presence, erecting vibrant flex boards across Thrissur.
