Coimbatore man gets seven years of imprisonment for attempting to murder wife in 2018

The Mahila Court in Coimbatore on Thursday sentenced a 34-year-old man from Kinathukadavu in the district to undergo seven years of imprisonment for attempting to murder his wife in 2018.

The court awarded the punishment to Sivakumar, a resident of Thamaraikulam near Kinathukadavu, for attempting to murder his wife Nagammal.

According to the police, Sivakumar used to quarrel with his wife under the influence of alcohol. The couple had a heated argument after Sivakumar came home drunk on June 11, 2018.

As per the prosecution case, Sivakumar poured kerosene on Nagammal and set her ablaze. The woman ran out of the house and doused the flames by rolling on puddles formed in the rain. Neighbours rescued her and admitted her to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. The woman recovered from the burns after several days of treatment.  A magistrate recorded her statement when she was under treatment.

The police registered a case against Sivakumar for attempting to murder Nagammal, besides booking his mother and his sister for dowry harassment. The trial in the case was completed in the Mahila court, which delivered the judgement on Thursday.

Judge V. Sundararaj sentenced Sivakumar to seven years of imprisonment and slapped a fine of ₹2,000 on him. Sivakumar’s mother and sister were acquitted by the court. B. Jisha appeared for the prosecution.
