Jaguar Land Rover CEO Adrian Mardell to retire after 35 years

Adrian Mardell will step down as chief executive of Jaguar Land Rover after more than three decades at the company, a spokesperson for the Tata Motors-owned automaker said on Thursday.”Adrian Mardell has expressed his desire to retire from JLR after three years as CEO and 35 years with the company,” the spokesperson said, adding that a successor would be announced in due course.
Mardell, who joined JLR in 1990, held various senior financial roles, including Deputy CFO, Chief Transformation Officer, and CFO. He became interim CEO in November 2022 following Thierry Bolloré’s exit and was formally appointed to the role in July 2023.
During his tenure, Mardell led the company through a crucial phase of transformation marked by financial recovery, strategic repositioning, and a push towards electrification. He oversaw a return to free cash flow positivity and the elimination of net automotive debt by the end of FY25, supported by strong demand for JLR’s Range Rover, Defender, and Range Rover Sport line-ups.Mardell also advanced the company’s ‘Reimagine’ strategy, aimed at repositioning JLR as a modern luxury brand with a fully electric Jaguar line-up and electrified Land Rover models. His leadership saw initiatives in platform consolidation, plant modernisation, and software-driven development, while navigating persistent supply chain and geopolitical challenges.

More recently, JLR revised its FY26 EBIT margin guidance down to 5–7%, from an earlier 10%, citing higher electrification-related investments and US tariffs on vehicles with Chinese content—factors affecting even UK- and EU-manufactured units.

JLR is expected to name interim or permanent leadership in the coming weeks as it moves into the next stage of its corporate transformation.
