  • Skillveri bridges India’s industrial skills gap using XR-based simulators.
  • Founded by Sabarinath Nair and Kannan Lakshminarayan out of IIT Madras.
  • Impact spans 700+ global installations and collaborations with Meta & DGT.

In 2012, a chance insight during an infrastructure project became the spark for a deeptech revolution in skill development. When labourers were imported from China and Peru to build Delhi’s T3 terminal, despite India’s abundant youth population, it underscored a glaring skills gap. Sabarinath Nair saw this not as a crisis, but as a challenge to be met with technology.

A Vision Born from the Ground Up

With roots in deeptech and a management background, Sabarinath’s career trajectory took him from the rural ATM innovator Vortex to co-founding Skillveri. The startup emerged from IIT Madras with a clear mission: to close the skill gap using immersive technology. Partnering with Kannan Lakshminarayan—a Distinguished Alumnus and Professor of Practice at IIT Madras—Skillveri combined digital innovation with mechatronics to solve the challenge of effective vocational training.

The Skillveri Platform: Passion Meets Precision

The name “Skillveri” draws meaning from both Tamil and Latin, symbolising passion-driven and authentic skills. Its XR-based simulators deliver hands-on training for critical industrial skills such as:

  • Welding
  • Spray Painting
  • HVAC/AC Maintenance
  • Solar Panel Installation

Built to deliver high-fidelity, measurable outcomes, these simulators replicate real-world tools and scenarios with remarkable accuracy. Learners benefit from gamified, learner-centric modules while industries gain cost-effective, scalable solutions. Compared to conventional training, Skillveri reduces training time by two-thirds and cuts material wastage by up to 80%.

Navigating the B2B Landscape

Skillveri’s core team operates from Chennai, handling everything from product design to hardware integration. Hiring focuses on problem-solving aptitude over credentials. However, as a B2B company, Skillveri faces dual challenges: long sales cycles and a need to convince both procurement teams and end users. Their experiential product demands hands-on engagement for full appreciation, often increasing acquisition costs.

Scaling with Innovation and Impact

Skillveri’s adaptability became evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, when it pivoted to a SaaS model to navigate physical delivery constraints. In just three years, the company established a footprint in over 100 educational institutions across North America. Closer to home, its collaboration with Meta and the Directorate General of Training (DGT) has led to five Centres of Excellence in India.

Backed earlier by MSDF and Ankur Capital and in its current avatar by Bluehill VC, Skillveri has achieved 700+ installations across 250+ clients. Institutional support from IIT Madras has played a vital role, with mentorship from stalwarts like Prof Ashok Jhunjhunwala, Prof Bhaskar Ramamurthi, and Prof Kamakoti Veezhinathan.

The Bigger Picture: Greener, Safer, Smarter Training

Skillveri’s simulators have a transformative social impact. By upskilling youth, they enable transitions from informal labour to formal careers, thereby uplifting entire families. The technology also prioritises environmental and learner safety—zero material wastage, no harmful emissions, and no risk of injury.

Looking Ahead

With a growing U.S. customer base, Skillveri is now eyeing expansion into EMEA and APAC. Its future plans include adding more skill modules aligned with industry demand.

As Sabarinath reflects, the key lesson has been shifting the narrative from cost to value: training is an investment. In a market where short-term costs often overshadow long-term benefits, Skillveri’s journey is a case study in perseverance, purpose, and precision.
