There has been an unfortunate update for wrestling fans who regularly tune in to watch WWE SmackDown. The show currently airs every Friday night on the USA Network.
Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez of The Wrestling Observer recently had a conversation about the blue brand. Meltzer noted that SmackDown will be staying three hours for the foreseeable future.
“Originally, it was going to stop in June, and USA (Network) had a show that they wanted to put on from 10 to 11. I think they realized that hour three is going to do, you know, triple of anything that they are going to put on in that show. I mean, SmackDown is so far and away the biggest show on that station,” said Meltzer. [0:00 – 0:21]
Bryan Alvarez suggested that WWE must be getting paid extra for providing an extra hour of television, and Dave Meltzer stated that was not the case.
“I guess the way they signed the contract, they must have given USA the option, because if they were making more money on the deal, it absolutely would have been said at the investor’s call, and we would have seen it. We would have seen the difference in the money,” added Meltzer. [From 0:29 – 0:44]
Undisputed WWE Champion John Cena is scheduled to battle Ron Killings this Friday night in a singles match on SmackDown.
Former WWE writer questions Cody Rhodes’ popularity on SmackDown
Wrestling legend Vince Russo recently questioned how over Cody Rhodes was following this week’s edition of WWE SmackDown.
Speaking on Sportskeeda Wrestling’s BroDown show, Russo suggested that he never understood the buzz surrounding The American Nightmare. The veteran compared Rhodes to United States Champion Jacob Fatu and suggested that the 39-year-old should be a heel.
“I just don’t get the whole Cody thing at all. He’s so, I don’t even know what word to describe. Look at Cody and put him next to Fatu.” Vince added, “He’s a heel, absolutely. He’s a heel. I’ve said it from day one.” [From 39:55 onwards]

Only time will tell if the company ever decides to decrease the length of SmackDown.
