New RAV4 Unveiled: Toyota unveiled the new sixth-generation RAV4 SUV on Wednesday. This marks the first model to use its new Arene software platform. Toyota calls this a step toward software-defined vehicles. The new RAV4 will launch in North America, Japan, and Europe by March 2026. It is among Toyota’s most popular models, with over one million units sold last year alone.

Fresh New Design: The latest RAV4 has a boxier shape and upright look, resembling the Land Cruiser. It comes in three styles: Core, Adventure (also called Rugged), and Sport. Toyota introduced a new GR Sport version as well. The model adopts Toyota’s new design language, featuring ‘Hammerhead’ C-shaped lights at both ends and trapezoidal wheel arches. Alloy wheels come in 17, 18, or 20-inch sizes.

Distinct Styling Lines: Each RAV4 style has unique elements. The Core version includes a closed grille, sculpted bumper, and black trim linking headlamps. The Adventure trim adds a large air vent and thick bumper cladding. The Sport series, especially GR Sport, has larger vents, mesh air intakes, and spoilers.

GR Sport Upgrades: The GR Sport version features a wider track, retuned springs, and performance dampers. It includes a lip spoiler and diffuser-style rear bumper. Inside, GR Sport adds sport seats, aluminium pedals, and GR logos. This variant is built for improved handling. The design and mechanical upgrades distinguish it from the standard Core and Adventure trims.

Interior Overhaul: Inside, the RAV4 features a 12.3-inch digital cluster and either a 10.5 or 12.9-inch infotainment screen. The new Arene operating system debuts here. Features include a heads-up display and a JBL nine-speaker audio system in higher trims. The centre console retains physical buttons for drive modes and air conditioning. A unique flip-over armrest also acts as a small table.

Arene System Debuts: The Arene platform allows Toyota to update safety and entertainment features over-the-air. It enables quicker integration of new software functions. Toyota says Arene will be used in future international models. One key feature is a rear-approach monitor to help with highway merging. In the future, Toyota may offer downloadable performance packs that mimic Lexus or other Toyota setups.

Hybrid-Only Powertrains: The RAV4 is now only available with hybrid (HEV) or plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains. There are no full petrol-only versions. Both use a 2.5-litre petrol engine. HEV models offer 226 bhp in FWD and 236 bhp in AWD. PHEV versions produce 320 bhp in AWD only. The new transaxle, power unit, and battery boost overall performance.

Electric Range Grows: The plug-in hybrid version includes a 22.7 kWh battery with an electric range of up to 100 km (WLTP) or 80 km in some variants. Charging from 10% to 80% takes 30 minutes using DC fast charging. The XSE and Woodland trims offer a CCS charging port. Self-charging hybrid options offer up to 191 hp, depending on configuration.

Production Strategy Shifts: Toyota is considering US production for the latest RAV4 to reduce the impact of import tariffs. The previous plan involved exports from Japan and Canada. The current RAV4 is made in Kentucky, Canada, and Japan. This potential shift reflects Toyota’s new supply chain approach, particularly in response to US market demands and trade regulations.

Global Rollout Planned: Toyota will launch the sixth-generation RAV4 in over 180 countries and regions. This SUV is already one of the brand’s top sellers, especially in North America. While it is not planned for India yet, earlier models were tested there.
