Thrikkakara residents can heave a sigh of relief, with the municipal authorities expecting to complete work on a biowaste treatment plant for the municipal area within four months. The plant had been long pending as the project initially faced issues related to land availability near the spot where waste is currently being collected.
Municipal chairperson Radhamani Pillai said the district administration had allotted 75 cents for setting up the plant. The tendering process was complete, and work was expected to begin any time.
An official said the successful bidder for the project had offered two models for constructing the plant. The operational details of the plant were expected to be decided after detailed discussions by the municipal authorities.
The plant will be financially supported by the Central Finance Commission and the State Suchitwa Mission, giving the municipality greater flexibility in choosing the operational model.
It was pointed out that the plant would utilise simple technology and could be commissioned in four months. The land allocation had made the process much easier, the official added.
Opposition Leader M.K. Chandrababu claimed that people had been waiting too long for the plant. He blamed the ruling front for the delay and said the municipality should have started the work earlier considering the importance of the project.
“The plant will be securely operated ensuring there is no inconvenience to the public,” the official said. The waste treatment plant has been a pressing need considering the rising population in the municipal area, which is estimated to have around 60,000 households.
