Take steps to mitigate flooding in Pumpwell, other areas, DC tells officials

Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner M.P. Mullai Muhilan directed officials on Monday to take measures to mitigate frequent artificial flooding at Pumpwell, Kottara Chowki, Kodialguttu, Kannur, Bailare, and Shivanagar in Mangaluru city.

Chairing a meeting with Mangaluru City Corporation officials, Mr. Muhilan asked officials to identify alternative routes and take action to divert stormwater from the six areas. A detailed assessment of catchment areas contributing to flooding should also be carried out.

He asked officials to take action to clear blockages, including structural blockages and encroachments, to ensure the smooth flow of stormwater in the ‘raja kaluves’. Mr. Muhilan expressed the need for a location-wise flood mitigation plan. Officers from the health section of MCC were asked to improve solid waste collection efficiency, especially in low-lying and waterlogged areas.
