Advance booking opened on Wednesday, and by Thursday 3 PM, the film had sold approximately 25,000 tickets across the top three national multiplex chains. While the numbers are modest, the industry is hopeful that Sitaare Zameen Par will follow a trend seen with several content-driven films in recent times – slower advance momentum but strong pick-up through positive word-of-mouth.
Given Aamir Khan’s three-year hiatus and the film’s socially relevant subject, trade expected a stronger start. However, Sitaare Zameen Par is not built like a typical massy opener. Its strength lies in its storytelling, emotional connect, and the goodwill Aamir carries with family audiences, particularly in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, where bookings are expected to pick up with spot and walk-in sales.
Though the film is likely to start under the Rs. 10 crore mark on Friday, there is growing optimism within the trade that it could witness a significant jump over the weekend, especially on Saturday and Sunday as audience reactions begin to pour in. Aamir’s previous films like Taare Zameen Par and Dangal also grew significantly due to strong word-of-mouth, and Sitaare Zameen Par could very well follow the same trajectory.
With emotional drama largely absent from mainstream Bollywood in recent years, Sitaare Zameen Par fills a unique gap and could emerge as a slow-burn success. All eyes are now on how the film performs once word-of-mouth kicks in – and there’s cautious but growing belief that it may surpass initial expectations.
