Kannada star Shiva Rajkumar has addressed the recent controversy surrounding Kamal Haasan’s remark during a Thug Life event, where the latter reportedly referred to Kannada as being a part of Tamil. The comment triggered backlash across Karnataka, with several pro-Kannada groups filing legal complaints against the veteran Tamil actor, accusing him of hurting the sentiments of the Kannada-speaking community.
Shiva Rajkumar defends Kamal Haasan amid language row but insists Kannada is ‘his first priority’
Amid the growing noise, Shiva Rajkumar clarified his own presence at the event and his unwavering commitment to Kannada, while also expressing deep admiration for Kamal Haasan. He said, “All the languages are important to us. But when it comes to the mother tongue, Kannada is the first priority, there’s no doubt about that. I’ve said this before, I can give my life for Kannada”. Asserting that he doesn’t believe that the actor needs to apologize, Rajkumar added, “He is a senior actor, and I am the biggest fan of him”.
Explaining what had transpired at the event and why some clips may have caused confusion, he stated, “At the event, I did not understand what was going on. But they’re showing clippings as if I’m clapping for that. I was clapping because he told, he was my chithappa (uncle).” The actor reiterated his long-standing admiration for Kamal Haasan and the emotional connection their families share. “I really like Kamal Haasan, he is my favorite. My father and Kamal Haasan had a special relationship, and because of that, I’m not just a fan—I admire him deeply. I consider Kamal Haasan an inspiration. We just went to his program and came back, that’s all. Even Kamal Haasan has a love for Kannada. When he came to Bengaluru, he could have been asked then. Why make it a big issue now?”
Meanwhile, Kamal Haasan has responded to the backlash in his own way, maintaining his position insisting that he would only apologise if he was wrong, further mentioning that this is his lifestyle which should not be tampered with.
The debate continues to stir strong emotions online, even as senior voices like Shiva Rajkumar call for understanding and context over conflict.
