Aggrieved residents of various residential colonies in Bhadrachalam on Sunday staged a demonstration near the karakatta (flood bank) in protest against alleged dumping of garbage near the banks of Godavari river in the temple town.
The demonstrators, under the banner of CPI (M) town committee, squatted on the way to karakatta in a bid to prevent the vehicles transporting garbage to the dumping site, citing potential public health hazards. They raised slogans demanding shifting of the ‘dump site’ away from the karakatta to the outskirts of the temple town to safeguard public health.
They alleged that the indiscriminate dumping and burning of garbage near the karakatta was causing air pollution and severe inconvenience to the denizens of the area as well as devotees visiting the temple. The demonstrators warned of an intense agitation if the gram panchayat officials fail to shift the dump site from the karakatta area to a distant place.
CPI (M) town committee secretary Gaddam Swamy, district committee member B. Narsa Reddy and others took part in the demonstration.
