Bharatiya Janata Party is committed to democratic principles. If the party or its legislator disgrace from these principles, people should raise their voice to question it, said BJP national general secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Radha Mohan Das Agarwal in Mangaluru on Wednesday.
Speaking at a programme “50 years of emergency” organised by the BJP, Mr. Agarwal said: “We (the party) are committed to democratic principles. If we divert from these principles, you (people) should challenge it such that these digression does not happen. This is the intention holding today’s programme,” he said.
Enlightened and vigilant electorate is the strength of democracy. “Slavery is not just when we are under imperial rule. Slavery is also when people sit quiet and do not raise their voice against abrogation of fundament rights. When citizens do not question corruption practices and maladministration of the ruling government that too is slavery.”
Indira Gandhi imposed emergency in June 1975 after Supreme Court upheld decision of Allahabad High Court to strike down her victory from Raebareli Lok Sabha constituency. Fundamental rights of citizens were curtailed. Leaders namely George Fernandes, L.K. Advani, Madhu Dandavate fought against emergency. Many youths underwent severe harassment in police custody during the period and died. It was after 21 months that the emergency was withdrawn.
Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi were known for their autocratic rules. “I do not see Congress coming to power in the Centre. If it comes, then you will see autocratic rule of Rahul Gandhi too. You can also see him impose emergency rule.” People should be aware of political leaders with negative thoughts and those who speak negatively about the country,” Mr. Agarwal said.
Dakshina Kannada MP and BJP State Secretary Capt. Brijesh Chowta accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of playing with Constitution book. Rahul Gandhi should seriously delve into dark days of emergency.
C.T. Ravi, MLC, accused Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge of showing more allegiance to (Indira) Gandhi family than the country.
