Land Rover has rolled out the Defender Octa, a high-performance SUV, in India with a starting price of ₹2.59 crore (ex-showroom). A special Edition One variant, priced at ₹2.79 crore (ex-showroom), is available only during the first year of production. This new model competes in the premium SUV market, taking on the Mercedes-AMG G63 with faster acceleration.

Performance and Engine Details: The Defender Octa reaches 0 to 100 kmph in 4.0 seconds, beating the G63’s time of 4.4 seconds. It is powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, sourced from BMW and paired with a mild-hybrid system. This setup delivers 626 horsepower and 750 Newton-metres of torque, increasing to 800 Nm in Dynamic Launch mode. An 8-speed automatic transmission directs power to all four wheels. The standard Octa has a top speed capped at 250 kmph, while the Edition One is limited to 160 kmph due to its off-road tyres.

Off-Road Capabilities: Built for more than just roads, the Octa features a 6D Dynamics suspension system with hydraulically linked dampers. This technology reduces body roll on pavement and improves wheel movement on uneven ground. Compared to the regular Defender 110, it offers 28mm more ground clearance, reaching 319mm, and can wade through water 100mm deeper. Its approach angle is up by 2.5 degrees, departure angle by 2 degrees, and breakover angle by 1.1 degrees, making it better suited for tough off-road conditions.

Design Features: The Octa uses the five-door Defender 110 as its base but stands out with unique updates. It has wider wheel arches, a front grille redesigned for better airflow, and 22-inch alloy wheels with all-season tyres. The Edition One variant switches to 20-inch wheels with off-road tyres, a Faroe Green paint option, and carbon fibre details. Both models feature an ‘Octa’ badge on the C-pillar and a gloss black roof.

Interior and Technology: Inside, the Octa includes performance seats with a 3D-knit texture and extra support, covered in Burnt Sienna semi-aniline leather. The dashboard has an 11.4-inch touchscreen for infotainment, and a refrigerator sits in the centre console. A notable addition is the Body and Soul Seat audio system, which vibrates the seats in time with the music. The Edition One’s seats are 30% lighter than standard leather ones, supporting its performance focus.

Mechanical Upgrades: The Octa comes with 400mm disc brakes featuring Brembo calipers, stronger wishbones, and a sharper steering ratio. These changes improve handling on roads and durability off-road. Since bookings began, the first batch of Defender Octas has sold out, showing high demand in India. New customers may need to wait longer for delivery.

Comparison with Mercedes-AMG G63: The Mercedes-AMG G63, priced at ₹3.64 crore (ex-showroom), is a direct rival. The Defender Octa offers a lower price point, quicker acceleration, and enhanced off-road features, making it a strong contender in this segment.
