Bushehr is home to Iran’s only nuclear power plant, which is run with Russian assistance. Iranian authorities, however, have not reported any problem at the plant.
Earlier, the UN Nuclear Chief had already warned that an Israeli strike on Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant could trigger a regional catastrophe, a ‘nuclear disaster’.
What, where is Bushehr — Iran’s only nuclear power plant?
Bushehr is Iran’s only operating nuclear power plant and was built by Russia. Located on the Gulf Coast, at Bushehr, Russian fuel is used and then taken back to Russia when its spent in order to reduce nuclear proliferation risk, reported Reuters.
Several Russian staffers are also employed at the plant.
The director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) told the UN Security Council on Friday that a direct hit on Russian-built Bushehr, located on the the Gulf coast, could “result in a very high release of radioactivity”, with “great consequences” beyond Iran’s borders.
