
Panic gripped passengers of a public transport bus on Tuesday morning when an elephant in a herd started advancing menacingly towards the bus on the Kaviaruvi-Navamalai stretch.
The driver stopped the bus immediately, and resumed the journey after the elephant joined the herd and moved away.
Forest Department officials advised the public to avoid travelling by two-wheelers and to use either four-wheelers or public transport for travelling along the stretch.
Clothes gutted
Clothes reportedly kept for sale at a house near Neelikonampalayam were destroyed in a fire that erupted during Tuesday afternoon, causing a gas cylinder to burst. There was no casualty. The cause of fire could not be determined immediately.
Fire tenders from Peelamedu and Coimbatore South Fire Stations were deployed to put out the fire in an operation lasting about an hour. The Singanallur police have registered a case and are investigating.
Man dies in accident
A passenger died of head injuries and three others in a car were injured when the vehicle reportedly moving at a high speed hit against median and toppled near Thudiyalur along Coimbatore-Mettupalayam Road.
The body of Lokesh (25) of Rathinapuri was shifted by the police to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital and handed over to his family after post-mortem.
The three injured persons, including Praveenkumar, who was driving the car, were admitted to the hospital. The police have registered a case against the driver.
Libraries opened in Tiruppur
TIRUPPUR Libraries were opened through video-conference by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin at the Muthamizh Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi Bus Stand and Government Medical College Hospital, Tiruppur, on Tuesday.
In keeping with the announcement made in the Assembly during February 2024, the libraries were opened for the public to make productive use of their waiting time, and to promote reading habit, officials said.
Tiruppur Mayor N. Dineshkumar took part in a function along with senior officials of the civic body at the bus stand.
