Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday said that a draft Bill to regulate private school fees in Delhi will be tabled in the Assembly soon, asserting that it would put an end to “arbitrary fee hikes” that flourished under previous governments.
The Delhi Cabinet cleared the draft Bill earlier this week. Once passed, it will introduce a three-tiered mechanism — with oversight committees at the school, district, and State levels — to approve any fee hikes. Violators will face penalties ranging from ₹1 lakh to ₹10 lakh.
Ms. Gupta accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of failing to implement any concrete legal framework during its tenure. “For 27 years, private schools had been arbitrarily increasing fees without any checks or clear regulations. Previous governments had no concrete legal mechanism to control such practices,” she told a gathering of parents, flanked by Education Minister Ashish Sood.
The CM assured the parents that her government will not allow any injustice to students studying in Delhi’s schools.
AAP did not respond to the allegations till the time of going to press.
