Filmmaker Atlee was conferred with an honorary doctorate by the Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology during the 34th convocation ceremony held on Saturday. The recognition marks a significant moment in Atlee’s career, as he returns to the same university where he once studied and began his journey toward becoming a director.

The university acknowledged Atlee for his contributions to Indian cinema through a successful filmography that includes Raja Rani, Theri, Mersal, Bigil, and the 2023 pan-India hit Jawan starring Shah Rukh Khan.

Speaking at the event, Atlee reflected on the personal significance of receiving the award from his alma mater, “It’s surreal to be honoured by the same university where I once walked in as a student with big dreams. It was here that I learned the power of belief.” He also took a moment to remember the late Founder Chancellor of the institution, Jeppiaar and shared, “Many know Jeppiaar sir supported my education. But he did much more — he encouraged my creativity. I once told him I wanted to make a short film. He simply said, ‘Pick up a camera and become a director soon.’ That moment changed my life.”

During his speech, Atlee acknowledged the support he has received from his family over the years. “My parents stood by me till I became a filmmaker. But the one who shaped who I am is my wife, Priya Atlee. And the person who’s made me a better human is my son”, he concluded.

Following the success of Jawan, Atlee is now working on a pan-India action drama starring Allu Arjun and Deepika Padukone. The upcoming film, tentatively titled #AA22xA6, is being produced by Kalanithi Maran under the Sun Pictures banner.

The doctorate from Sathyabama University adds another milestone to Atlee’s career, recognising not only his work in mainstream cinema but also the roots of his creative journey.
