The All India Cine Workers Association (AICWA) has called for the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) against actor-director Rishab Shetty and the production team of Kantara: Chapter 1 following the tragic drowning of junior artist MF Kapil on the film’s set in Kollur, Karnataka. The incident, which occurred on May 6, 2025, has prompted the association to demand an impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the aspiring actor’s death, raising serious concerns about safety protocols on film sets.
AICWA seeks FIR against Rishab Shetty after junior artist’s death on Kantara Chapter 1 set
In a media release issued on May 8, AICWA expressed profound sorrow over the loss of Kapil, a budding talent from Kerala, and urged authorities to hold those responsible accountable.
“AICWA demands that the local police authorities register an FIR against Mr. Rishab Shetty and the entire production team involved in the shooting of ‘Kantara 2 (Chapter-1)’ for the negligence that led to this tragic incident,” the statement read. The association emphasized the need for a thorough probe to ensure justice for Kapil’s family, stating, “We urge the authorities to conduct an impartial investigation to bring justice to the bereaved family and to set a precedent for the safety of all artists and workers in the film industry.”
The incident occurred during a break in the shooting schedule when Kapil went for a swim in the Kollur Souparnika River. According to reports, he was swept away by a strong current, and despite a swift search operation by local authorities and the fire department, his body was recovered later that evening. A case has been registered at the Kollur police station, with investigations underway to determine the exact circumstances of the accident.
AICWA’s statement underscored the responsibility of production units to prioritize the safety and well-being of all crew members, particularly junior artists who often work in challenging conditions. “The film industry must ensure that no worker, especially vulnerable junior artists, is exposed to unsafe conditions,” the association asserted, calling for stricter safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
