

Electric Bike Debut: LiveWire Group, Harley-Davidson’s electric motorcycle division, revealed two prototype electric bikes at the Harley-Davidson Homecoming Festival in Milwaukee. These 125cc-equivalent motorcycles are designed to be lightweight, weighing about 250 pounds, with a low seat height of around 30 inches. Aimed at new and returning riders, they prioritise accessibility and ease of use for short, everyday rides.

Shared Design: Both prototypes feature a steel trellis frame, with the electric powertrain acting as a stressed chassis member. They use upside-down front forks and a single rear monoshock for suspension. The bikes ride on 12-inch wheels, ensuring a compact and manageable build for urban or off-road environments, depending on the model.

Battery System: Each bike is powered by two removable, swappable batteries. Riders can charge them on the bike or in a separate docking station, offering convenience for continuous use. This modular system simplifies recharging and supports LiveWire’s goal of making electric motorcycles practical for daily activities.

Performance Details: Preliminary tests indicate the bikes accelerate from 0 to 30 mph in three seconds. They have a top speed of approximately 53 mph and a range of about 100 miles per charge. These specs suit short commutes or recreational rides but limit freeway use due to speed constraints.

Street Version: The street model is tailored for urban environments. It’s built for city commutes, casual weekend rides, or custom modifications. Equipped with Mitas MC 19 tires (120/80-12 front, 130/80-12 rear), it offers agility and ease, making it ideal for new riders or those seeking a compact electric option.

Trail Version: The trail model is designed for outdoor settings like backyards, dirt paths, RV parks, or campgrounds. It features knobby Shinko off-road tires (120/70-12 front, 130/70-12 rear) for better grip on rugged terrain. This version suits activities like camping, fishing, or casual off-road exploration.

LiveWire’s Goal: LiveWire aims to broaden the appeal of electric motorcycles. These prototypes target diverse riders, from urban commuters to outdoor enthusiasts. Their small size, low weight, and simple operation make them approachable for beginners and appealing to mini-moto fans seeking fun, practical bikes.

Production Outlook: While still prototypes, the bikes’ polished design suggests they are close to production-ready. LiveWire is gathering feedback on colours and accessories through social media, indicating potential market plans. A full reveal is expected at EICMA 2025, though no official production date has been confirmed.

Kymco Collaboration: LiveWire’s partnership with Taiwanese manufacturer Kymco supports these prototypes. The street model features Kymco-branded brake callipers and wheels, hinting at their manufacturing role. This collaboration may help LiveWire fill its planned S3 model category, expanding its electric motorcycle lineup.

Brand Context: LiveWire faces challenges, with declining sales and reduced investment in Q1 2025. Despite this, the Homecoming unveiling demonstrates the brand’s commitment to innovation. These mini-moto concepts, alongside two upcoming maxi-scooters based on the S2 ARROW platform set for 2026, aim to revitalise LiveWire’s market presence.
