In a major relief to the citizens of Madurai, the Corporation officials took a major initiative of laying new tar topped roads on Thursday.
Participating in the bhoomi puja ceremonies, Tamil Nadu Minister for Registration and Commercial Taxes P. Moorthy said that the Corporation had awarded contracts to eligible firms. He said that the quality would not be compromised and it would be laid as per the standards.
The civic body officials led by Commissioner Chitra Vijayan had tabled a long list of roads to be laid in the previous council meeting for approval of the Councillors.
According to a press release, a total of 718 roads would be laid covering zones 2, 3 and 5 respectively. As many as 21 wards would benefit from the mega project.
The Minister participated in functions at Subramaniapuram, Jaihindpuram, Madakulam and other locations in the presence of Mayor Indrani Pon Vasanth, District Collector M. S. Sangeetha, Councillors and other officials.
In a brief chat with media persons, the Minister said that various stretches in the city had been damaged in the recent rains. The civic body had taken stock of them and work was already in progress. He said that there was no dearth of funds and the roads would be laid as per the standards.
During the occasion, Mr Moorthy also informed that the civic body would soon commission a modern garbage transfer station near Kochadai, which can take in up to 200 metric tonnes of waste daily. This, he said, would come up at a cost of ₹9.74 crore.
While most of the road projects were covered in Madurai West Assembly Constituency, the Minister said that it was wrong to say so as the Corporation focused in all the 100 wards. Based on the needs of the people, the officials conducted study and based on the recommendations, the government approved the funds.
